Bemvindo! mapKITE presented at the MundoGEO#Connect 2016 in Brazil

The mapKITE terrestrial and aerial tandem geodata acquisition concept and project were presented on May 10th in the sixth edition of “MundoGEO#Connect Latin America 2016” and in the second “DRONEShow Latin America 2016” joint events, in São Paulo, Brazil. The joint events gathered more than three thousand participants between May 10th and 12th.

The group ENGEMAP, a mapKITE partner, organized a session in the aforementioned events where ENGEMAP's Business Executive Antonio de Lira and GeoNumerics' Chief Executive and Scientist Dr. Ismael Colomina presented the applications and concept of mapKITE respectively. With some fifty participants, the session was well attended and ended with small group discussions.

MapKITE is a novel geodata acquisition and georeferencing paradigm for 3D corridor mapping. MapKITE combines Terrestrial Mobile Mapping (TMM) with unmanned airborne Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (APRS) and enhances the combination with new and innovative concepts: Kinematic Ground Control Points (KGCPs); point-and-scale photogrammetric measurements of artificial targets; way point-based, land vehicle-to-unmanned aircraft virtual tethers; mobile ground control stations for unmanned aircraft (“drones”); and the use of the new Galileo ranging signals.

In a mapKITE mission, geodata is acquired simultaneously from above and from the ground, in a ground-air tandem mode, where the APRS unmanned aircraft follows the TMM land vehicle at some, given, controllable altitude above ground. The land vehicle carries a target of known size and shape on its roof that materializes KGCPs and allows for their point-and-scale measurements on images. As a result, images and cameras of mapKITE missions can be oriented and calibrated (self-calibration) respectively without the need to establish traditional [static] ground control points.

The ENGEMAP Group is both a technology- and service-oriented group that covers geodata acquisition (satellite, manned/unmanned airborne and terrestrial), georeferencing, image interpretation, map and geoinformation production, as well as cadastral and land management services. The group includes the ENGEMAP, SATMAP, SENSORMAP and CADMAP companies.

GeoNumerics (Castelldefels, Catalonia, Spain) is a research and development (R&D) intensive small-and-medium-enterprise (SME) company specialised in geomatics and accurate navigation. The mapKITE concept is an invention of GeoNumerics. GeoNumerics was recently awarded the “Innovative SME” seal by the Spanish “Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad” (Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness).

MapKITE is currently being developed by an international consortium within the frame of the project “mapKITE: EGNOS-GPS/GALILEO-based high-resolution terrestrial-aerial sensing system.“ The project is funded by the European Commission (EC) through the European Union (EU) “Horizon 2020 Programme for Research and Innovation,” supervised by the European GNSS Agency (GSA) on behalf of the EC, and coordinated by GeoNumerics. The mapKITE consortium includes ten organizations from five European countries and Brazil.
